Devlog #1 - Inspiration comes from interesting places

Before starting the development of this game, I've already thought of the randomization of a fishing game with different difficulty of catching. I honestly did not actively search for that mechanic up until I started developing and I stumbled upon a game called Idle Fishing by AO Games.

I tried out Idle Fishing and I am immediately bombarded with the rarity of the fish and their respective selling price points. I then actively searched for this mechanics and found the fishing mechanics of WEBFISHING, a fishing simulator game by lamedeveloper, that at this point in time has more than 50k reviews that is just sold at $5. I have yet to play WEBFISHING to research its contents but I now have 15 hours of game time in Idle Fishing. I loved the concept but from what I've learned is the activities that is provided is too easy and the content for the day can just be finished in under 15 minutes. Yes I have 15 hours of gameplay in 2 days but that's because of exploring the biome concept that the game provides as well. Maybe this is what the game designer intended but I am not very keen about it. Don't get me wrong, I am not hating on the game, it might just not be for me.

Current Game Progress

Before starting this devlog I've already started with a prototype adding music and a panel that shows what the player has caught. I've also color coded the panels based on the rarity the fish has.

I've also populated the fish database for the River biome complete with size differences that is shown in the panel.

What's Next

As of now, the rarity and the mutation of the fish is random with no weighted chances but at least the core game works. Up next in my list would be implementing the rod level feature and adding catch chances based on the rarity and the fish itself. I would also need to add to the database the different placeholder images of the fish so that they're representative of the fish that is caught.

Thanks for reading this devlog, hope that when the MVP is released you will enjoy it!
